The Whale Museum Project Support Needs

Help The Whale Museum with its Sightings Database Research:

Donate Now to Support GPS Research Equipment

Ways to Contribute:

  • Donate your Garmin iQue 3200 or 3600 (must be in good working condition)
  • Make a cash contribution towards the purchase of this equipment (one unit costs $300-$350)

Background:

The Whale Museum is in need of handheld GPS units, specifically Garmin iQue 3200 or 3600. The Whale Museum has maintained a sightings database for endangered Southern Resident killer whales since 1976. This valuable resource is shared with managers and researchers and needs to be updated every year. Data is gathered by Whale Museum researchers and staff as well a large number of other contributors. Along with information about which whales were seen, we also record when and where they were seen.

In order to continue collecting this data in an efficient and accurate manner from a variety of sources, we need Garmin units (either 3200 or 3600) that will be programmed to accept data input for pod type and record the location of the sighting.

Help us to continue maintaining this valuable resource that was used in part to designate critical habitat when the Southern Residents were listed as endangered.

Your donation of this device to The Whale Museum is tax deductible to the value of the unit (approximately $300). If you don’t own a Garmin iQue but want to support this important program of The Whale Museum please consider making donation that would allow us to purchase these units.

If you would like to make a donation of an iQue for this project please contact our Research Curator, Jason Wood by email or telephone (360) 378-4710 ext. 25. If you would like to contribute financially to this project please use the click here. On the form, please note that your donation is for a specific program and list the program as ‘research equipment’.

Thank you for your valuable support.
