Bill Passed by Washington State Legislature -- Sent to Governor Gregoire for Signing

After discussion, testimony and amendments, a bill to "protect orca whales from impact of vessels" has been passed by the Washington State Legislature. It passed the Senate on March 6 with 41 "yeas" and 7 "nays"; on March 8, it passed the House (71 "yeas" and 22 "nays). The bill has been sent to Washington State Governor Chris Gregoire for signing.

Kari Koski, director of Soundwatch, is a major participant in the political process at the County, State and Federal levels in order to enact laws to protect Southern Resident Killer Whales from irresponsible boaters. Kari is drawing on her 15 years experience with the SW Boater Ed program. She is also utilizing Soundwatch’s “vessel monitoring” data to help draft appropriate regulations specific to boater behaviors and actions frequently seen near the whales.

Congratulations to Kari and the many partners for their diligent work in gaining stronger protections for our endangered whales. We still have a long way to go … so stay tuned for updates.
