A new addition to J-pod brings welcome news to whale lovers and brings the current count of the Southern Resident Community to 86. The new addition, first seen on August 6 and given the alpha-numeric designation J-49 by The Center for Whale Research, is the first known calf for mother J-37 (Hy’Shqa).
Hy’Shqa, born in 2001, was given her name in a Samish potlatch naming ceremony. Her name is a Coast Salish word meaning “thank you” or “blessing.” If J-49 makes it through the winter, it will receive a name in the summer of 2013 and become part of The Whale Museum’s Orca Adoption Programd.
Both Hy’Shqa and J-49 belong to a special family group. J-49’s great-great grandmother is Granny (J-2) who is believed to be the oldest member of the Southern Resident Community at ~101 years of age! This new calf also has a grandmother (Samish – J-14), an aunt (Suttles – J-40), and an uncle (Se-Yi-Chn – J-45).
