With Fraser River salmon returns expected to be lower than average, the fate of this year's sockeye season remains up in the air.
Jeff Grout, regional resource manager for salmon with the Fisheries and Oceans Canada, said the low return rate could mean there will not be enough sockeye in the Fraser River this summer to allow fishing by all parties.
"There's a possibility that there will be no fisheries for the commercial industry," Grout said Monday.
The expected sockeye return on the Fraser River is expected to be almost half the average - Grout said the return is expected to be between 1.9 and 2.9 million. The average is 4.4 million.
Sockeye run on a four-year cycle, with some years coming in lower than others. "This would be one of the low years of abundance," Grout said.
